ANDY DONATO | FEATURE exhibition | MARCH 11 - 25
After joining the art department at the Toronto Telegram as a graphic artist, Andy was appointed Art Director and began cartooning on a part-time basis. Following The Telegram closing its doors in 1971, Andy focused solely on his painting. He exhibited his work in two sold-out exhibitions at the Kar Gallery in Toronto.
Later he was approached by some former colleagues to launch The Toronto Sun. Andy held the position of Art Director and was responsible for creating weekly cartoons. Some of his most famous work has featured lampoons of the former Prime Ministers. Most politicians consider it an honour to be featured in his editorialized cartoons and many request the original drawings of which they are featured. In 1997, Andy took an early retirement and relinquished his job as the Sun’s Art Director. He continued his cartooning job on a freelance basis, leaving enough room to focus on his painting.
Painting has always been his first love. Andy is best known for his painting style that he calls “bent realism." His exaggerated angled paintings of Toronto alleyways, urban landscapes and city streets are delightful and relatable. After so many years of dedication to his art, whether cartooning or painting, there is a depth of emotion in his work that continues to captivate viewers.
PAUL TOM | SOLO exhibition | MARCH 28 - APRIL 11
This show is the culmination of six years of Paul Tom's dedicated focus to developing a collection of abstract paintings. The key stages of this experience involved marking moments of insight, integration, and ultimately the transformation of his painting into something new. He is looking forward to sharing this new series of paintings with collectors that showcases this new phase in his development as a professional artist.
Paul Tom is inspired by Jackson Pollock’s ability to create space in his work between the colours, which form shapes that the viewer can "enter" and pass through layer by layer. He is motivated to create natural environments that people can explore and discover on many levels. Tom’s intimate relationship to nature, formed as a young boy, drives him to share his passion and connection to the natural world with others through his art.
Join us for the opening of Paul Tom’s watershed exhibition on Saturday March 28, from 2-6 pm with Paul in attendance.
