TIME & COLOUR, a documentary produced by KINO/LORE Productions is filmed on the island of Battle Harbour and features Canadian artist Jean Claude Roy, recipient of the Order of Newfoundland & Labrador. Filmmaker Nichollas Mullins takes us on a journey as he follows Jean Claude's Roy's plein air adventure, painting the most beautiful and remote island.
Once the salt fish capital of the world, Battle Harbour is a restored, 19th century fishing village on a one-kilometer-long island in the Labrador Sea. People journey to the island to experience the incredible panoramic views of the ocean dotted with icebergs. A beautiful spot for whale-watching by day and stargazing by night, the island is without streetlights which also makes it an ideal location to view the northern lights.
Battle Harbour was home to a thriving fishing community bustling with merchants, fishers and tradespeople, but a federal cod moratorium decimated the community and left the island without a stable industry. Families left the island to find work, but many return every summer to maintain their generational homes and preserve their love of the island that holds their ancestors' history. A historic trust, the island’s charming fishing village has an incredible array of restored buildings and structures from the 19th and 20th centuries. People travel to the island to experience the historic buildings, friendly people and its natural beauty and the unique experience of living away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
